GOVT RENEWS CALL ON NPA REBELS TO ABANDON ARMED STRUGGLE

April 07, 2024

Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. has reiterated the government’s call on remnants of the New People’s Army (NPA) to abandon the armed struggle and contribute to unity, peace and development.

"Conflicts can be resolved peacefully. Our commitment is to show all parties that dialogue is a more effective approach than armed struggle," Galvez said during a press briefing on April 4, 2024 at the Presidential Communications Office (PCO).

Galvez shared the initiative's success in rallying support from various sectors, including religious communities and international allies. He stressed the importance of public diplomacy in demonstrating that armed struggle is outdated and counterproductive.

“The essence of our peace efforts lies in the heart of our communities. By engaging various sectors—religious groups, local leaders, and international allies—we are knitting a fabric of unity strong enough to withstand the challenges of conflict," Galvez said.

The government's efforts to bolster the peace process have been comprehensive, reaching key regions nationwide. Engagements with the Western Mindanao Command, NOLCOM, and SOLCOM, as well as discussions with Philippine Army commanders, have generated positive feedback and optimism. These consultations seek to incorporate diverse perspectives into the peace strategy, ensuring it reflects the community's collective voice.

Galvez said that as the peace negotiations evolve, the Security Cluster's guidance remains

essential. The government's approach is open and consultative, aiming for a peace path marked by wisdom, inclusivity, and a shared vision of a harmonious future.

In a pivotal step toward lasting peace, the signing of the Joint Communique in November 2023 between the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and the National Democratic Front (NDF), negotiating panel of the Communist Party of the Philippines-NPA, brings hope and sets a new direction for resolving conflicts.

Galvez underscored the agreement's critical role in fostering stability and encouraging dialogue over armed confrontation.

The Joint Communique represents a significant milestone, embodying the nation's unified aspiration for peace. The government's dedication to realizing this vision of peace is unwavering, as efforts continue to transform hope into reality for everyone.
