BACOLOD CITY – Several police stations in Negros Occidental have converted their patrol vehicles into mobile pantries going around the community to distribute basic and essential goods to those in need.

As of Friday, those that have put up “pantries on wheels” are the municipal police stations in Valladolid, Binalbagan, and La Castellana, along with police stations in the cities of Cadiz and Silay.

Valladolid Police chief, Maj. Wilfredo Benoman Jr. said by bringing the community pantry closer to the people, more would be able to avail of free food.

“Some residents live far from the police station, so we are the ones who will go to them,” Benoman said.

Once the patrol vehicle carrying goods stops at a particular barangay, residents queue up to get what they need from the mobile community pantry.

Policemen distribute rice, canned goods, vegetables, eggs, fruits, as well as some household items.

“Aside from bringing a little help to more people, the mobile community pantry also prevents possible crowding in our station,” he added.

Benoman said through the project, they hope the town residents would feel that the police cares for them while maintaining peace and order.

“Let us always remember a cheerful giver lives longer,” he said as he sought support from stakeholders to sustain the community pantry and reach more areas.

The initiative is under the “Barangayanihan” of the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office headed by Col. Romy Palgue, who earlier invited Negrenses in-need to avail of basic goods from the pantries and also asked those who have something to share to take part in the project. (PNA)
